Frequently Asked Questions

Who are we?

Rogue Primary is a play-based K-2 public school of choice in the Central Point School District. Our school places play at the heart of education. We are committed to providing an experience for our youngest learners that is full of joy, curiosity, and choice. We believe that school should be socially interactive, actively engaging, joyful, iterative (full of trial and error), and a meaningful experience. We place a strong emphasis on practices that are developmentally appropriate and supportive of all learners.

What is play-based learning?

Play-based learning focuses on developing skills through structured play, exploration, and hands-on experiences. It encourages creativity, problem-solving, and social interaction while meeting academic learning goals.

Do students just play all day?

This is a common misconception about play-based learning. Rogue Primary students engage in research-based practices that support how children learn best. While play is a central part of our curriculum, students also participate in structured learning activities. We balance academic instruction with guided play to support social and cognitive development.

Who can apply?

Rogue Primary is open to all Central Point School District residents who will be entering kindergarten or first grade in the 2025-2026 school year. Students with an approved transfer are also eligible to apply.

Can my student ride the bus?

Students who live within the Central Point School District attendance area have access to transportation to and from school. Students on a transfer from outside the district must provide their own transportation.

Do you provide breakfast and lunch?

Yes! Food is free for all students, including breakfast, lunch, and a healthy snack to support their well-being throughout the day. Please note that this is subject to change each year.

Do students have specialized classes?

Yes! Our students enjoy a variety of specials, including music, physical education, library, and PlayLab.

How do you support students with different learning needs?

We offer a range of support services for students with varying needs, including differentiated instruction, individualized learning plans, and special education services. Teachers collaborate with specialists to ensure each student receives the support they need to succeed.

Will my child have the same teacher all three years?

Kindergarten students will have one teacher, then a new teacher in first grade. Our teachers loop from first to second grade, so students will have the same teacher for both first and second grade.

Do you go on field trips?

Yes! Our students participate in monthly field trips, known as Go Rogue Days. These trips are designed to enrich their learning experiences.

Are parents allowed to volunteer?

Yes, we encourage parental involvement. Parents are welcome to volunteer in the classroom, on field trips, or at special events. Please contact the school for more information on volunteer opportunities and the required clearance process.

How much recess time do students get?

Students have a 25-minute morning recess, a 45-minute lunch break, and an additional 15-minute afternoon recess. Kindergarten students also have additional free time within the classroom to foster creativity and independent play.

Do you use technology?

We recognize technology as a part of our culture but prioritize developmentally appropriate practices for young learners. While our teachers use technology for instruction and planning, student use is intentionally limited. In kindergarten, students rarely engage with technology. In first and second grade, technology is used sparingly and only for specific learning activities that support instruction. Our focus remains on hands-on, interactive learning experiences that best support early childhood development.

What is your approach to discipline and behavior management?

We focus on positive behavior reinforcement and creating a supportive, respectful environment. Our approach encourages students to understand and manage their own behavior with guidance from teachers and staff.

How do you communicate with parents?

We believe in strong communication between home and school. Our district utilizes ParentSquare as our primary communication tool. We also use our school website and social media to share important news and events.

What extracurricular activities do you offer?

In addition to our core curriculum and specials, we offer extracurricular activities that may include a weekly PlayClub as well as community events. These opportunities vary based on grade level and available resources.

How do you support social-emotional learning?

We embed social-emotional learning into daily activities, helping students develop self-regulation, empathy, and conflict resolution skills. Our foundation is the CharacterStrong curriculum, which supports these skills through engaging lessons and activities. Social-emotional learning is naturally woven into our classroom environment, academic instruction, and play-based experiences to foster a supportive and connected school community.

What are your safety protocols?

Student safety is our top priority. Our campus is fully fenced with a single point of entry, ensuring a secure environment for students and staff. We follow the ALICE protocol for emergency preparedness, providing age-appropriate strategies for responding to potential threats. Our safety procedures include fire drills, lockdown drills, and other emergency response protocols. Staff receive regular training, and we continuously review and update our safety measures. Additionally, we maintain open communication with families to keep them informed about our safety protocols.

What is your policy on homework?

We believe that young children learn best through play, exploration, and quality family time. As a result, we do not assign traditional homework. If a student does have homework, it is extremely limited and intended only to reinforce essential skills. Our focus is on fostering a love for learning while ensuring students have time to rest, play, and engage with their families outside of school.

Do you have a school counselor?

No, we do not have a school counselor. However, we partner with LaClinica, which provides individual therapy and medical services for students. Additionally, our Student Wellness Specialist supports social-emotional learning through classroom activities, small group work, and individual student support, fostering emotional well-being and positive school experiences.
